There were 13 Dunham households in Maine recorded in the first United States Federal Census in 1790. One of these households must have been the family of James Dunham Jr. (~1788-1863) of Orland, Hancock County, Maine, my third great-grandfather. This post is one of a series to understand each of these Dunham families.

Dunham Families in Maine in 1790

The family of Asa Dunham is recorded in the 1790 United States Census as having five members, including Asa and his wife Lydia. At the time they were living in Number 4 Plantation in Cumberland County; in 1790 the community had a population of 344. This area had first been settled in 1779, and would be incorporated as Paris only three years after the census. In 1805 it was transferred to Oxford County and would become the county seat. Paris is only 4.8 miles from Norway, which was incorporated from Number 4 Plantation in 1793, and much of the history of the two towns is intertwined. Another adjacent town that figures in the story of this family, Woodstock, was once part of Paris.

Asa was a veteran of the Revolutionary War,1 having served under Captain Jesse Harlow on the Hudson River in 1778.2 Later he met an early death in service during the War of 1812. “He enlisted in the company of Captain Bailey Bodwell, and was in the War of 1812, on the frontier, and was killed, or died of disease while in the service. Afterward the family became residents of this town and Woodstock.”3 He was buried in Burlington, Vermont.4

Asa was the brother of Eleazer Dunham, who died in Paris 8 Jan 1864, age 93 years,5 Eleazer’s wife Jane died in Paris in September of 1850, age 76.6 A local history states: “She was a Bryant of Plympton, a niece of Solomon Bryant, our early settler.”7 According to the same history, Eleazer and Jane came to Paris about 1799.8 While Eleazer and Jane settled came to Paris from Massachusetts well after the birth date of Joseph Dunham Jr., it should also be noted for clarity that none of their sons were named James.

Asa and Eleazer were both sons of Deacon Sylvanus and Rebecca (Crocker) Dunham, born in Plympton, Plymouth, Massachusetts.9 Deacon Sylvanus is a descendant of the Pilgrim progenitor Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth (Deacon Sylvanus5, Israel4, Eleazer3, Joseph2, Deacon John1).

Consideration regarding James Dunham Jr. of Orland

All of the family members of Asa Dunham are accounted for and there are no gaps. There are no descendants of Asa named James in the first two generations. Therefore, if does not appear that James Dunham Jr. of Orland could be a member of this family, although he is a cousin due to the common ancestor Eleazer3 Dunham of Plymouth.

I want to thank Gratia Dunham Mahony, who graciously shared with me her notes on this family, making this installment in my series much easier.

2 comments on “The Asa Dunham Family of Norway and Paris, Maine

  • Your post on Asa Dunham is great. Especially impressed by the careful connection to footnoted sources.
All seems to jib with what I knew about my grandfather, Harold Hiram Dunham (born West Paris, Me), grandson of Samuel Woodard Dunham, (born Oxford, Me).
    Samuel’s grandfather was Asa.
My question is about Asa’s war service. I have seen many places reporting he died in Burlington Vt in 1813 but no reference to why or where he was burried. It seems possibly he was among the many that died in that war from disease since there were military hospitals in Burlington at that time and many were lost to disease rather than combat. I live in Vt, not far from Burlington but would have no idea where to look for his grave. Possibly, if lots were dying then it was a large unmarked grave? Do you know?
Also can you further verify your reference to his serving in the rev war?
    Thanks

  • Was looking at my certificate I have for membership to the Sons of the American Revolution by way of Asa Dunham. Came across this and am thoroughly pleased with the amount of information. Hoping this is my ancestor!
